Ian Black is a graphic designer and art director who makes his home & studio on Vancouver Island, B.C., Canada. Ian was born and raised in Montreal, Quebec and started his training as an apprentice at a commercial artglue, dough eraser & photography studio in the early sixties that did work for all the major ad agencies of the day.
(He learned what rubber cement et al were used for)
Ian then moved onto the advertising agency business as an art & production assistant and then onto become an Art Director at a national ad agency's Montreal office. (McConnell-Eastman) After several years of working on accounts such as CN, BP, & CAE, he moved on to become Creative Director at a large commercial art studio followed by opening his own studio/ad boutique business. He then moved on and partnered in a direct marketing ad agency until, in 1978, Ian decided he was spending too much time on administration and not enough time on creative, and he opted for operating as an individual proprietorship, working with other marketing individuals on co-operative projects. He has won design and typographic awards over the years and is a professional member of the Society of Graphic Designers of Canada.
For leisure, Ian likes to cook, walk on shorelines with his beloved, exercise, meditate, and play golf. (not necessarily in that order)
